Overachiever Workshop

"Overachiever" Workshop

Saturday, June 8, 2024
1:00 - 5:00pm
Norwalk, CT

Once upon a time, a West Coast Swing student approached me about creating a time when there could be focused practice with a partner. I considered how that idea could be implemented for a larger group of students who would like to improve their dancing with a more concentrated approach. This afternoon is about creating such an opportunity. While many might think that this type of focus is directed for the intermediate dancer—it is also for the beginner dancer that needs an a more intentional approach to improvement. Think of this as a group private lesson, where each dancer and each partnership get to practice West Coast Swing while receiving guidance and feedback. This can also be experienced as practice time for many of you that simply want to work on technique, footwork, or patterns that were experienced in class or seen in a video. This is your opportunity to be an "overachiever" (or simply a dedicated dancer).

Health Policy

We strive to balance providing a safe environment while returning to a normal social setting. The following policy is subject to change at any time in the event of new guidance issued by the CDC, state, or local governments. By attending any of our classes/privates/events, you agree to this health policy. Effective January 1, 2024:

  • Health Cooperation: Students will cooperate with any health requests from Erik Novoa, guest instructor, or staff (e.g., using hand sanitizer, using a mask, stepping outside to address a health issue, etc.).

  • Registration: You must pre-register for these classes (see below). We will not be touching credit cards or cash for these classes.

Schedule:

12:45pm: Doors Open

Arrive on time, warm up, and get ready to improve your dancing.

1:00pm: Guided Practice

Bring your own partner or take turns with a partner. This segment is designed to help you and a partner work on moves and technique so that you become more connected with each other and proficient. We will switch partners approximately every 15 minutes so that each dancer gets to tailor their dance to their new partner. This type of learning helps dancers learn to give feedback to each other to create a cooperative learning environment.

Ideally, students should sign up with a partner of the same relative level. We will try to keep the ratio of leaders and followers mostly even. If necessary, solo followers will be asked to drill basic footwork, syncopations, spins and turns, and possibly mix in with other partnerships.

3:00pm: The Amalgamation

Erik will teach a group of 3-4 moves that the students will incorporate into their dance. The goal is to use the progress from the guided practice and combine it with the moves provided by Erik to create an amalgamation that starts to look more polished and competitive.

4:30pm: Practice Dancing

You've done the work. Now, you can have some fun (while trying to sustain the improvements that you've made).

5:00pm: Class Night Out (Optional)
