Charlotte's First Party

Charlotte, Anna and I went to our first party together this past weekend. It was the wedding of a friend and colleague of Anna’s so we were able to go as a family. We attended a church ceremony at 4pm in New York City and then drove to the reception in Piermont, NY.

Charlotte was a little fussy during the dinner. Even though Charlotte had also been fed, she was still not relaxed. It wasn’t until the music transitioned from the dinner playlist to the Motown songs, that Charlotte was able to feel at home.

Charlotte calmed down while dancing in my arms to 2 songs (she generally falls asleep to 2 songs when at home). We put Charlotte in her car seat to take a little nap while Anna and I finished our dinner as two briefly unencumbered parents.

Charlotte started to awaken just in time to hear the DJ start his dance set. Songs such as “Blurred Lines”, “Get Lucky”, “Party Rock Anthem”, and “Moves Like Jagger”. Those songs are some of Charlotte’s favorites as they are very familiar to her because they are the songs she has been hearing since she was in utero as part of our West Coast Swing and Hustle careers.

It’s hard to say if Charlotte understood the whole event. I had told her that if she could make it through the ceremony, the drives to NYC and to Piermont, and dinner, she would be able to dance the night away with her mommy and daddy. At one point, I didn’t think Charlotte was going to make it to the party, but she partied like her rock-star parents.

At the end of the night, as we were putting her in her car seat, I thanked Charlotte for coming to the party and asked her if she had a good time. I was met by the most sincere smile and coo a new daddy could ask for. It seemed like Charlotte enjoyed going to her first party.

She slept well on the ride home.
