As
summer approaches, I would like to send
out a gentle reminder to social dancers
everywhere. Whether you are a man,
woman, young, young-at-heart, new to
social dancing or been dancing for
years....when the summer heats up, our
"personal cooling system" kicks in and
we all sweat.
There is really no getting around it. Of
course, we perspire to different degrees
while dancing. While some people can
seem to go dance after dance with only a
glisten on their forehead, others are
mopping their brow at a minute and forty
seconds. For the former....make sure
you're well hydrated. For the latter, I
offer a suggestion....consider bringing
an extra shirt on your night out!
When
I was dancing in Wisconsin, I had a
friend who would
change
shirts,
not once or twice, but up to three times
an evening. He had realized early on in
his dancing career that as his shirt got
"darker" the number of women who were
"sitting this one out" increased. On a
hunch, he began bringing extra shirts
and suddenly found many more available
partners.
At the heart
of this anecdote is comfort; both yours
and that of your dance partners. So
bring an
extra shirt
or two with you and keep it in your car
or
dance bag (away from those shoes!) When
you find your shirt is running out of
dry spots to touch, run to the restroom,
make the switch and get back out on the
dance floor to enjoy the rest of your
hot summer night!
