Hustle Workshops
Saturday, June 30, 2007

with Erik Novoa (2 Time National Champion)
& Anna Brady

Club Ballroom
33 Elizabeth Street
Derby, CT

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the movie "Saturday Night Fever".  It's time to start your journey to the dance that defined a generation, The Hustle.  Not the line dance....the partner dance.

Hustle is the fiercest and most dynamic of the partner dances.  It is the perfect choice if you only have 30 seconds to impress your friends.  It is also the ideal dance for a night club or holiday party because it is primarily done to popular music of yesterday and today.

Come out and start your journey on Saturday, June 30.  Already know the basics?...Challenge yourself with the Wraps & Shadows, Traveling Moves  and Erik's Special Brew workshops.  The night will get down with a fun party for you to play with all your new steps.

The Schedule:
3:00pm - 4:00pm Hustle - Beginner I
This is a basic class introducing the fundamentals of Hustle and some of the basic patterns and theory of movement.   We will explore moves like the cross body, open throw out, underarm turns and simple return to closed.  It is perfect for the "day one" beginner.

4:00pm - 5:00pm Hustle - Beginner II
We continue building on the basic fundamentals and add some more beginner moves such as The Wheel, Under The Bridge etc.  This workshop is perfect to review basics or for people who feel comfortable with the Beg I class.

5:00pm - 6:00pm Pizza Party for Pre-Registrants
Our way of keeping you happy.  We will only order food based upon persons who have pre-registered.

6:00pm - 7:00pm

Hustle - Wraps and Shadows

Wraps and Shadows are the core moves for every proficient hustle dancer.  They add speed and dynamics.  We will break down the energy-feeding lead and the on-spot turns that make these moves so common.

7:00pm - 8:00pm Hustle (Int) - Fun Traveling Moves
Nothing shows control and partnership better than being able to travel your dance around the dance floor.  We'll show you some simple moves to get you eating up the space around you.

8:00pm - 9:00pm

Hustle (Int/Adv) - Erik's Special Brew
Time to see if you can handle Erik's Special Brew of ridiculously, hot-shot moves.  Good technique, great physical lines, and some impressive dancing will keep you busy until my return.  Good Luck....bring your "A" game.

* Do not take this class if you are a day-one beginner.  You must have a working knowledge of Hustle and is subject to instructor's approval.  Please see Dance Etiquette tip # 8.

Who is Erik Novoa:

Erik Novoa has been competing in Hustle since 2000 and immediately stole the show by becoming a 2 time national champion in 2001 & 2002.  He later became a finalist on ABC Family's revival of Dance Fever, becoming the only Hustle act on the premier series which aired in July 2003.

He has also excelled in Just Hustle and Jack & Jill competitions at numerous national events.  Erik is also an outstanding follower.  Anyone who has seen him follow in a Jack & Jack competition knows that there is nothing he can't (or won't) do. His 20-year background in ballet, jazz, modern, musical theater and tap is evident in his avant-garde routines, creative social dances, and expert teaching style.

Erik began developing the West Coast Swing, Hustle and Salsa communities in southern Connecticut in January 2006, offering regular weekly dance classes in South Norwalk and Black Rock.  In his first year in business, Erik was recognized and selected as the editor's choice for the "Best Way To Get In Step" in Fairfield County's "2006 Best Of The Gold Coast" rankings.

Erik's former training in ballet, jazz, tap and musical theater enables him to teach in a style which is knowledgeable, clear and concise.  He is a featured instructor for many regional and national events because of his ability to get people dancing quickly using his humor, personality, style, rapport with students, and his solid knowledge of dance fundamentals and technique.  Students complete each workshop with a better understanding of the specific dance, overall dance technique and musicality.

Who is Anna Brady:

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, trained and performed in both classical and modern styles with Minnesota Dance Theatre & School and Minnetonka Dance Theatre. She studied and competed in ballroom/latin dance as an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while completing a degree in the life sciences.

Anna continued dancing at the University of Chicago, teaching, choreographing and performing with the resident ballet organization while working on an advanced degree in biological sciences.  After attending a summer intensive at the Alvin Ailey School, she moved to New York in April 2005 and has performed with Bernier Dance Company and the Little Orchestra Society.

Most recently, she has performed "Ordinary Day", a contemporary ballet piece, with Erik Novoa at the New Year's Extravaganza and for the Chicago Rebels Swing Club.
